Chinese religious culture is a vast synthesis of indigenous deity cults, ancestor veneration, Daoist ritual, Buddhist devotion, and Confucian ethics. Its mythology includes cosmic gods, local tutelary spirits, perfected immortals, and legendary culture heroes.

The story of Chinese

Chinese mythology has no single canon, but it is anchored by narratives of cosmic creation, divine kingship, and the ordering of nature. Early texts describe a three-tiered cosmos of heaven, earth, and the underworld, populated by the Supreme Emperor of Heaven (Tian or Shangdi), astral deities, terrestrial spirits, and ancestors. The sage kings Yao, Shun, and Yu the Great tamed floods, established agriculture, and founded the moral and political order of civilization.

The pantheon is extraordinarily diverse. Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, is among the most widely worshipped figures in East Asia. The Jade Emperor presides over a celestial bureaucracy mirrored in earthly administration. Local gods such as Tudigong the earth god, City Gods, Mazu the sea goddess, and Dragon Kings govern specific places and professions. Ancestors remain central to family ritual, receiving offerings at home altars and during Qingming and other festivals.

Daoism contributed a vast body of gods, immortals, exorcistic rituals, and alchemical traditions. The Eight Immortals, the Queen Mother of the West, the Three Pure Ones, and the perfected saints of Daoist lineages populate a sacred landscape of grotto-heavens and immortal islands. Buddhist imports from India and Central Asia added bodhisattvas, pure lands, hell judges, and monastic orders, which were thoroughly sinicized.

Confucianism emphasized filial piety, ritual propriety, and the Mandate of Heaven, providing an ethical framework that shaped imperial ideology and family life for more than two millennia. Today Chinese religion remains a lived synthesis of temple worship, festival procession, divination, and domestic ritual, both on the mainland and throughout the diaspora.
