Buddhist Pantheon

Buddhist mythology begins with the historical figure Siddhartha Gautama, born in the fifth century BC into a royal family in the Himalayan foothills of present-day Nepal. Shaken by encounters with old age, sickness, death, and a wandering ascetic, he left palace and family to seek liberation from suffering. After years of ascetic practice and final meditation under the Bodhi tree, he attained enlightenment and became the Buddha, the Awakened One. He spent the rest of his life teaching the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, dependent origination, and nirvana.

The tradition soon developed vast mythologies around the Buddha’s previous lives as a bodhisattva, recorded in the Jataka tales. Mahayana Buddhism expanded the pantheon to include cosmic buddhas such as Amitabha, Vairocana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, and Amoghasiddhi; great bodhisattvas such as Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin), Manjushri, Samantabhadra, and Kshitigarbha; and celestial realms or pure lands attainable through faith and devotion. The Lotus Sutra teaches the universality of buddha-nature, while the Sukhavativyuha Sutra describes Amitabha’s Western Pure Land.

Vajrayana Buddhism, prominent in Tibet, Nepal, and Mongolia, adds tantric deities, wrathful protectors, dakinis, and elaborate visualization practices. Theravada Buddhism, dominant in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, retains a more conservative focus on the historical Buddha and the arhat ideal, while still cultivating stories of gods, nagas, and local spirits who support the dharma.

Buddhist art, architecture, and ritual express these myths across Asia in stupas, cave temples, mandalas, thangkas, and festivals. The tradition’s emphasis on compassion, impermanence, interdependence, and liberation continues to attract practitioners and scholars worldwide, while regional schools preserve distinctive narrative and iconographic traditions.
