Polynesian Pantheon

Polynesian cosmogonies typically begin with Te Kore, the Void, proceeding through stages of darkness, light, and the emergence of land and sky. In many island traditions, the sky father Rangi and earth mother Papa are separated by their children—Tāne, Tū, Rongo, Tangaroa, and others—creating the space for life and human activity. This primordial separation is a foundational act of cosmogony shared, with local variations, across Tahiti, Hawaii, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, and the Cook Islands.

The demigod Maui is perhaps the best-known Polynesian culture hero. Across island traditions he slows the sun, fishes up islands from the ocean floor, and steals fire for humanity. His tricks often backfire, teaching lessons about hubris and mortality. Other significant figures include the Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele, the Tahitian sea god Tangaroa, and the Māori forest god Tāne, who separated his parents and brought the first human being to life.

Genealogy (whakapapa) is central to Polynesian religion and social organization. Chiefs trace descent from the gods, and land rights, ritual responsibilities, and social rank are validated through carefully memorized lines of ancestry. The concepts of mana (spiritual power or efficacy) and tapu (sacred restriction) govern interactions between people, places, objects, and the divine. Violating tapu can invite supernatural consequences; lifting it requires proper ritual expertise.

Polynesian mythology was transmitted orally through chant, song, dance, and carving until European contact brought writing and missionary conversion. Colonial disruption caused severe losses, but revitalization movements across the Pacific have reclaimed navigation, language, tattoo, hula, and whakapapa as living expressions of ancestral knowledge.
