The Two Moieties. Ngalyod divided the people into moieties, the two halves of society whose rules of marriage, ceremony, and land ownership still structure Kunwinjku social life. The serpent's law is not written down; it is sung, painted, and enacted in ceremony. To break it is to disturb the balance of country and to invite illness, accident, or the withdrawal of the waters.

Not the First Rebrand

The Rainbow Serpent is one of the most widely distributed figures in Aboriginal Australia, yet it is not a single deity under many names. Each language group knows a distinct serpent with its own country, kinship, and ceremonies: Yurlungur in Yolŋu country, Wagyl in Noongar country, Julunggul among some north-eastern groups, and Ngalyod among the Kunwinjku. The office is only the latest translation.
