Before the Office, the Story
The Strength of the King Ascends. In the Pyramid Texts the dead king is made nḫt so that he may ascend to the sky, row with the gods, and stride among the stars. The ascension corpus — above all Utterances 273–274, the so-called Cannibal Hymn's neighbors in the same ritual program — commands that the king's limbs be made mighty and his equipment ready before the ferry of the gods will carry him across the Winding Watercourse. Spells call on the gods to firm his seat and arm his arm: without strength, even a dead king is refused passage.
The Contendings of Horus and Seth. The Late Egyptian narrative of the Contendings of Horus and Seth — preserved on Papyrus Chester Beatty I — is the fullest mythic treatment of nḫt as a deciding force. For eighty years the two gods litigate before the Ennead, and the case cannot be settled by genealogy, oratory, or the gods' own preferences: it keeps being settled, and unsettled, by demonstrations of strength. Seth hauls up an enormous mountain from the sea bottom; Horus answers by lifting a stone ship of sixty cubits, carrying it to the water.
