The Myth at Work
Out of the Rime. Before the world there was Ginnungagap, the yawning void, with the frozen rivers of Niflheimr to the north and the sparks of Múspell to the south. Where the heat met the rime, Snorri says, the hoar-frost melted and dripped, and the drops quickened into the shape of a man: Ymir, whom the frost-giants call Aurgelmir. — hold that image; the industries below are where it goes to work.
The Self-Begetting Giant. Asked how Ymir got children when he knew no giantess, Vafþrúðnir answers with the strangest genealogy in the corpus: from under the primeval giant's arm grew a man and a woman together, and one of his legs begot a six-headed son on the other.
