Why Veles is spelled that way — and what it costs to get it right
There is a version of this name the early internet had to settle for: veles. This is the file on how Veles replaced it.
Veles has no surviving epic. His dossier is a chronicle oath here, a famine there, and — towering over the fragments — the modern reconstruction by Ivanov and Toporov of the myth-cycle in which he is the thunderer's eternal adversary. The Name Before the Marks
Spoken, the name runs `/veles/` — 'VEH-les', two quick syllables; the stress falls forward, as in the modern South Slavic reflexes of the name.

The restored name is not a plaque; it is an address. The temple of Veles lives at /veles/, with its mythology in the lore halls, its peer-reviewed record in the Scholarly Edition, and its place in the pattern atlas on the patterns floor.
Tier-2 here means one preserved truth — not less important, just singular. The temple shows it and names it.
Where the Name Stood First
No temple of Veles has been identified, and his material dossier is thin — fitting for a god of hidden things. The anchor is textual-archaeological: birchbark letters from eleventh–twelfth-century Novgorod address creditors and debtors on Volosova ulica, 'Volos's street', the market quarter — proof that the cult left footprints in urban topography even where no shrine survives. Riverside hoards and water-logged deposits are sometimes laid at the door of the underworld god, but the attribution is unprovable, and no figurine or amulet bears his name. The honest summary is that Veles's archaeology is his absence: the god of concealment kept himself concealed, and the street sign is the whole monument. The temple on the web is the newest of these addresses — the first one that fits in a pocket.
