How Venus was rebuilt, mark by mark
The workshop file for Venus. Every rejected form is recorded here too — that is the point of keeping notes.
What We Found
The attestation runs through the tradition's own sources: —. Meaning: "The Roman goddess of love and beauty, mother of Aenēās; namesake of the planet Venus (epigraphic VENVS; all vowels short, so the standard form carries no diacritics)".
The figure behind the name: Venus’ mythology is Aphrodite’s retold in a Roman accent — the foam-birth, the Judgement of Paris, the loves and the intrigues — plus a Roman coda the Greeks never wrote: the divine ancestress of Rome.
What the Name Carried In
The Foam-Birth. The Greek story: Cronus’ severed genitals fell into the sea, and from the foam (aphros) rose the goddess, first at Cyprus’ shore. Roman poets from Ennius onward retold it with Venus’ name — the sea-foam’s child Latinized without effort, the island of Cyprus keeping the cult’s oldest address.
The Judgement of Paris. At the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, the uninvited Strife threw the golden apple ‘to the fairest’ — and Hera, Athena, and Venus asked the shepherd Paris to judge. Venus’ bribe, Helen, won; the judgement’s price was Troy.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
The Forum of Caesar’s temple of Venus Genetrix, the House of the Vettii’s great fresco, the Venus de Milo and the Capitoline Venus — her monuments span the empire. The planet’s telescopic mapping keeps her name on the morning sky. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.
What We Rejected
The plain ASCII venus — admissible as a fallback, never as the primary. A wrong accent would have been worse: the rulebook is explicit that a misplaced mark is worse than none.
What We Set Down
Venus — aSCII-equivalent form
For the voice: “WAY-noos” — classical; “VEE-nus” in the church pronunciation
The temple stands at /venus/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.
