The provenance file on Stýx

Provenance record 458 · Stýx · one temple, fully accounted for.

Provenance

1. The attestation. Στύξ — "Hateful". On record: Homer, Iliad 14.271–279; 15.36–38, Homer, Odyssey 10.508–515, Hesiod, Theogony 383–403, 775–806, Herodotus 6.74.

2. The preserved evidence. y → ý (Acute on y) — absent from the ASCII form styx, present in the restoration, verifiable against the sources above.

3. The narrative record. The Water the Gods Swear By — The Iliad's formula runs through the epic: when Zeus wishes to make an oath unanswerable, he swears 'by the earth and the broad heaven above and the down-flowing water of Styx' (Iliad 15. 36–38). The Mother of the Reign — Hesiod's Theogony (383–403) makes her the hinge of Zeus' kingdom. Styx, eldest daughter of Ocean and Tethys, joined herself to the Titan Pallas and bore four children — Zelos (Rivalry), Nike (Victory), Kratos (Power), and Bia (Force).

4. The physical record. The Greeks placed her water in Arcadia: the Styx waterfall near Nonakris in the northern Peloponnese — a cliff-plunge so cold it was said to be her true stream, and Pausanias reports the locals' oath by it. The gorge at Aroania (Krathis river) is shown to visitors still as the legendary drop. Homer's and Hesiod's lines are her oldest attestations; the Roman poets from Virgil to Statius keep her darkly flowing in every underworld scene.

5. The current holding. The temple at /styx/, classified Tier 2. The restoration keeps one feature the ASCII form drops. One is enough to matter, and the label says so plainly: Tier-2.

6. The documented resonances. Legal, Justice & Compliance, Faith & Spiritual Organizations, Philosophy, Ethics & Standards — seats argued and weighted in the pattern atlas, read through the myths in this temple's Resonance File.

7. The primary sources. Theogony, Homeric Hymns, Works and Days — the library this file answers to, open at the Sacred Texts collection.

8. The continuing record. 'Stygian' is her everyday immortality: the word for the unbreakably dark and the absolutely binding. Her children govern the modern vocabulary — force, zeal, power, victory — and her water gave literature its favourite contract: the deal that cannot be exited, from Faust to fantasy fiction, from sworn testimony in a courtroom to the 'Stygian' underworlds of games, novels, and films, where she appears more often than any other classical borrowing.

The Restoration Files are written from the same canonical record as the temples themselves: the lexicon, the lore catalog, the pattern atlas, and the cited scholarly sources. If a file ever disagrees with its temple, the temple is right — tell us, and the file will be corrected.
