How Kṣitigarbha was rebuilt, mark by mark

What We Found
The attestation runs through the tradition's own sources: क्षितिगर्भ. Meaning: "The Earth-Womb — bodhisattva of the great vow to empty the hells (kṣiti 'earth' + garbha 'womb')".
The figure behind the name: Kṣitigarbha's mythology is the story of a vow repeated across lifetimes — a brahmin daughter, a king — each life renewing the same impossible promise.
What the Name Carried In
The Commission in the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven. The Sūtra of the Past Vows of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva is set in the heaven of the Thirty-Three, where the Buddha preaches for his mother's sake before his passing. There he recounts Kṣitigarbha's long record of vows and formally entrusts to him all beings of the coming age — the interval between Śākyamuni's parinirvāṇa and Maitreya's arrival.
The Brahmin Daughter. The sūtra's most beloved past life is a daughter's. A pious brahmin girl's mother died slandering the Dharma, and the daughter, selling all she had to make offerings, was granted a vision of the Avīci hell — where she learned that her merit had already lifted her mother toward heaven.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
His surviving landscape is vast: Jiuhuashan's temple-mountain, with the flesh-body hall of the Silla prince, remains an active pilgrimage city; the Dunhuang caves preserve banner-paintings of Dìzàng enthroned among the Ten Kings of hell, the earliest great cycle of his iconography. Japan's material record is the stone Jizō itself — uncounted thousands of carved figures at village edges, crossroads, and temple yards, from medieval stelae to today's bibbed statues — the densest distribution of any Buddhist image in the archipelago. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.
What We Rejected
The plain ASCII ksitigarbha — admissible as a fallback, never as the primary. A wrong accent would have been worse: the rulebook is explicit that a misplaced mark is worse than none.
What We Set Down
Kṣitigarbha — The restoration preserves more than the ASCII form can express — stress, length, or a letter the Latin keyboard lost — which places it, mechanically, in Tier-1.
For the voice: kshih-tih-GUR-bhuh — the kṣ is one conjunct sound; the bh is aspirated.
The temple stands at /sites/ksitigarbha/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.
