The Myth at Work
The Idols in the Dnieper. In 988 the Primary Chronicle's procession of drowned gods includes, between Stribog and Mokosh, a name no Slavic tongue built: Simargl. The chronicler lists him without curiosity, one idol among six, but modern scholarship has never been able to leave him alone — because his name betrays a long journey, from the Iranian Simurgh, through the speech of steppe peoples who traded and raided along the Black Sea, into the capital of Christianizing Rus'. — hold that image; the industries below are where it goes to work.
A Name from Persia. The Simurgh of Iranian tradition is one of the oldest great birds of world mythology. The Long Employment
Simargl's legacy divides in two. Among Iranists he is a footnote in the biography of the Simurgh — evidence of how far the great bird's name flew, from Avestan hymns to a chronicle on the Dnieper. The age changed. The work did not.
