Before the Office, the Story
The Request from Heaven. According to Iryeon's Samguk Yusa, the Buddha asked Hwanin whether there was a land on earth where his teachings could flourish. Hwanin looked down and saw the Korean peninsula, then offered his son Hwanung to descend with heavenly attendants and sacred regalia.
The Descent of Hwanung. Hwanin granted Hwanung three heavenly seals and three thousand retainers. Hwanung descended beneath a sandalwood tree on a high mountain, bringing laws, grains, and the arts of civilisation to the human world.

Not the First Rebrand
Hwanin entered Korean Christian vocabulary as Hananim, the name for the biblical God, while in shamanic and nationalist discourse he remains the mythic ancestor of the Korean people. The two traditions interpret the name differently—one as a personal deity, the other as a celestial title—but both preserve the sense that Korea's legitimacy flows from heaven. The office is only the latest translation.
