Vasubandhu was a historical philosopher, not a mythological figure — a monk of Puruṣapura (Peshawar) who, the early Tibetan biographies say, wrote the Abhidharmakośa as a Sarvāstivādin critic and then embraced the Yogācāra Mahāyāna of his half-brother Asaṅga. His 'myths' are the legends his tradition grew around a real life.

The Myth at Work
Three Years in Seclusion. The Tibetan biographies recount that Vasubandhu withdrew into seclusion to master the Abhidharma of the Kashmir Sarvāstivādins, and emerged with the Abhidharmakośa — six hundred verses (kārikā) of flawless eight-syllable metre that summarized the entire system. When the Kashmir masters admired the verses but missed their own subtlety, he added an auto-commentary (bhāṣya) of his own in which, tradition says, he quietly refuted them. — remember the shape of that act. You will see it again, wearing a logo.
The Begging Letter of Asaṅga. Vasubandhu had mocked the Mahāyāna as a corruption of the Buddha's teaching, calling its scriptures fabrications. His elder half-brother Asaṅga, already a great Yogācāra teacher, sent him no rebuttal — only a note reporting that he was dying, and begging Vasubandhu to recite the Mahāyāna sūtras for him. — that is not just a story. It is a business model, four thousand years early.

The Long Employment
The Abhidharmakośa never went out of use: it has been memorized, commented, and debated continuously for some fifteen centuries, from Nālandā to the great Tibetan commentarial traditions (Prajñākaramati's and Yaśomitra's subcommentaries in Sanskrit; Sthiramati's in the mind-only line). Its author is honored as a patriarch in China and Japan, and Tibetan debate courtyards still open with his verses. The age changed. The work did not.
