How Théia was rebuilt, mark by mark
From the restoration bench — the working notes on Théia, kept because the process is the proof.
What We Found
The attestation, in the attestation LSJ and Beekes, Etymological Dictionary of Greek give us: Θεία. Meaning: "Goddess, divine".
The figure behind the name: Theía has no independent narrative myths; her importance is genealogical and cosmological.
What the Name Carried In
Birth of the Luminaries. Hesiod names Theía as the wife of Hyperion and mother of Hēlios (Sun), Selēnē (Moon), and Eōs (Dawn). The trio governs the visible heavens; without Theía, there is no source from which these lights can arise.
Theía in Thessaly. Pausanias mentions a sanctuary of Theía in Thessaly, where she was honored as mother of the sun. Her cult was local and relatively rare, overshadowed by the greater worship of her children.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
Theía had no Panhellenic sanctuary of note. A local cult in Thessaly is mentioned by Pausanias, and she appears in the genealogical poetry of Hesiod and the Orphic tradition. Her iconographic presence is largely indirect: she is implied by the numerous representations of her children Helios, Selene, and Eos in Greek and Roman art. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.
What We Kept
The evidence, mark by mark — 1 feature the keyboard form theia cannot hold:
- e → é — Acute on the diphthong ει (Θεῖα). Kept.
What We Rejected
theia as the primary form. It survives as the convenience it is; it does not get to lead. The hierarchy is full restoration first, and this name can afford to stand at the top of it.
What We Set Down
Théia — What survives here cannot be shown in ASCII: a feature of the original that the fallback alphabet flattens. That is the Tier-1 test, and this name passes it without argument.
For the voice: 'thay-EE-ah' — the first syllable is long and level, the second pitched high and bright.
The temple stands at /sites/theia/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.
