How Ọrúnmìlà was rebuilt, mark by mark
Bench notes, Ọrúnmìlà: what we found, what we rejected, and what we finally set down. Kept in the open, because a restoration you cannot audit is just a spelling with confidence.
What We Found
The attestation runs through the tradition's own sources: Ọ̀rúnmìlà. Meaning: "Heaven knows who will succeed".
The figure behind the name: Ọrúnmìlà's mythology is textual as much as narrative: it lives in thousands of Ifá verses (òdù Ifá) that record his journeys, judgments, and interventions.
What the Name Carried In
The Witness at the Foundation of the World. According to Ifá tradition, Ọrúnmìlà was the only orixá present when Olódùmarè created the earth. He observed the placement of the rivers, the rising of the mountains, and the distribution of destinies.
The Sixteen Principals. The Ifá corpus is organised around sixteen principal odù, each with sixteen sub-odù, generating 256 basic combinations. Each odù is a world of stories, proverbs, and medicines.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
The Ifá corpus is preserved orally and in manuscript form across Yoruba-speaking regions, with archaeological evidence including divination implements such as carved palm nuts (ikin), brass chains (ọpẹ̀lẹ̀), and wooden divination trays (ọpọ́n Ifá). Diaspora collections hold beaded necklaces, iron staffs, and ritual texts that document the continuity of Ọrúnmìlà worship from West Africa to Cuba and Brazil. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.
What We Kept

What We Rejected
Any form invented for availability. The rule on the bench: if the evidence does not carry it, the domain does not get it — whatever the registrar has in stock.
What We Set Down
Ọrúnmìlà — Tier-1 is not a compliment; it is a measurement. This restoration keeps something the ASCII form provably loses, and the measurement is repeatable.
For the voice: aw-ROON-mee-LAH — low 'aw', high 'ROON', then low 'mee-LAH'.
