Before the Office, the Story

From Maiden to Monster. The famous transformation story is Roman, not Greek. Ovid tells it in the Metamorphoses (4. 790–803): Médousa was once a maiden of surpassing beauty, famed above all for her hair — and Neptune lay with her in the temple of Minerva.
