The Cult
Medousa was never worshipped — no altar, festival, or priestess is attested anywhere in the Greek world — and honesty requires saying so plainly. What she possessed instead was function: the gorgoneion, her severed head, was the supreme apotropaic device of Greek religion. Her face guarded temples as antefixes and akroteria, shielded Athena's aegis, and stared from gates and grave stelai. If that amounts to a cult, it is the cult of warding, practiced by her image rather than to her person — the closest Greek religion comes to an anti-cult, and a measure of how completely the monster outgrew any need for worship.
