How Ẹṣù was rebuilt, mark by mark
The workshop file for Ẹṣù. Every rejected form is recorded here too — that is the point of keeping notes.
What We Found
The attestation runs through the tradition's own sources: Ẹ̀ṣù. Meaning: "Divine trickster".
The figure behind the name: Ẹṣu's mythology is a catalogue of tricks, translations, and tests, preserved in the Odu Ifá corpus and recorded in the twentieth century by Bascom, Idowu, and Verger.
What the Name Carried In
The Two Friends and the Two-Colored Hat. Two farmers worked adjoining fields, and they were so close that they swore an oath: whatever fortune came to one would be shared with the other. Ẹṣu, walking between their farms one day, wore a hat that was red on one side and black on the other.
The Messenger Who Must Be Fed First. Every Yoruba sacrifice follows one law: Ẹṣu is served first. The teaching is framed as history in the tradition recorded by E.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
Ẹṣu is represented materially by small cement or stone heads placed at crossroads, doorways, and market entrances throughout Yorubaland and the diaspora; the oldest documented examples are the sculpted stones photographed by researchers in the early twentieth century, and the doorway heads of Bahia photographed by Verger. Red-and-black bead necklaces, cigars, rum bottles, and phallic staffs fill Candomblé and Santería collections, and the cooking pot (asebere) of Exu sits at the entrance of every terreiro. Colonial and missionary accounts frequently misidentified these figures as diabolical — a misreading itself preserved in the archive. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.
What We Kept
The evidence, mark by mark — 1 feature the keyboard form eshu cannot hold:
- u → ù — Grave: low tone. Kept.
What We Rejected
The plain ASCII eshu — admissible as a fallback, never as the primary. A wrong accent would have been worse: the rulebook is explicit that a misplaced mark is worse than none.
What We Set Down
Ẹṣù — The restoration preserves more than the ASCII form can express — stress, length, or a letter the Latin keyboard lost — which places it, mechanically, in Tier-1.
For the voice: eh-SHOON — start low on 'eh', rise to a bright, slightly nasal 'SHOON'.
The temple stands at /eshu/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.

The Restoration Files are written from the same canonical record as the temples themselves: the lexicon, the lore catalog, the pattern atlas, and the cited scholarly sources. If a file ever disagrees with its temple, the temple is right — tell us, and the file will be corrected.
