Why Bodhisattva is spelled that way — and what it costs to get it right
There is a version of this name the early internet had to settle for: boddhisattva. This is the file on how Bodhisattva replaced it.

The Name Before the Marks
Spoken, the name runs `/ˈboː.dʱi.sɐt̪.t̪ʋɐ/` — 'BOH-dhi-sut-tuh' — stress on BOH; the dh is a voiced breath; the final va is a soft 'wuh.'

Where the Name Stood First
The bodhisattva's archaeology begins where the Buddha's ends. Aniconic reliefs at Bharhut and Sanchi already show the bodhisatta of the jātakas — the Vessantara and Śibi legends carved in the 2nd–1st c. BCE — while the great anthropomorphic bodhisattvas arrive with the Kuṣāṇas: the Maitreya of Gandhāra with his flask, Avalokiteśvara beside Amitābha's triad. The caves of Ajanta (5th–6th c.) give the career its narrative walls — the jātaka cycles painted as the bodhisattva's résumé. Along the Silk Road the type multiplies: the crowned Guanyin of the Tang, the eleven-headed Kannon of Nara's Hōryūji. The figure is, in the end, archaeology of an idea: art keeps finding new bodies for a being who has, by definition, promised not to stop being born.
