The bodhisattva is the Mahāyāna's answer to its own founder's stunning success: if one man woke, the door was never locked. Its mythology runs from the Pāli canon's bodhisatta — Gotama's pre-awakening selves — to cosmic vows that hold the door open for everyone else.

The Myth at Work
An Awakening-Being, Not Yet a Buddha. The word is a compound: bodhi, awakening, plus sattva, being — "one whose essence is awakening. " In the Pāli canon bodhisatta is a technical term for the Buddha before his awakening: the Nidānakathā and the Mahāpadāna Sutta (DN 14) use it of Gotama's past lives, from the bodhisatta enthroned in Tuṣita down to the last birth at Lumbinī. — remember the shape of that act. You will see it again, wearing a logo.
The Promise That Builds a Bridge. Everything begins with a vow. The Gaṇḍavyūha Sūtra — the final book of the Avataṃsaka — sends the pilgrim Sudhana through fifty-three teachers and ends inside Maitreya's tower, where past vows stand visible as architecture, each floor a former life; the praṇidhāna, "may I not sit on awakening's seat until every being is freed," is the bodhisattva's founding act. — remember the shape of that act. The bodhisattva is the most painted figure in Buddhist art after the Buddha himself — Guanyin's white-robed thousand-armed forms fill the caves of Dunhuang and the museums of the world; Samantabhadra rides his elephant across China's sacred mountains; Jizō's red-bibbed statues line every Japanese roadside, guardian of dead children. The vow's four lines — beings are numberless, I vow to free them; delusions are inexhaustible, I vow to end them — open every sesshin on earth. The age changed. The work did not.

A match that cannot survive an argument does not survive review. That is the whole trick: the patterns are claims, and claims can be tested.
