How Vulcānus was rebuilt, mark by mark
From the restoration bench — the working notes on Vulcānus, kept because the process is the proof.
What We Found
The attestation runs through the tradition's own sources: VVLCANVS. Meaning: "Possibly from fulgere (to flash) or a pre-Roman fire root".
The figure behind the name: Roman myth borrowed Hēphaistos' stories for him, but his cult is older and darker than the smith of Olympos: Vulcānus is first the fire that must be averted.
What the Name Carried In
The Fish Fires. At the Volcanalia of August 23, when the stored grain stood at its driest and the city's risk of fire peaked, the Romans kindled bonfires for Vulcānus and threw live fish into the flames. Plutarch, puzzling over the rite in his Roman Questions (47), records the substitution plainly: the fish — creatures of the opposite element — were consumed in place of living things, so that the fire's hunger was answered without paying it a human debt.
Venus and Mars. The finest comedy in the mythic stock became Roman property. Vulcānus, told by the Sun of his wife Venus' affair with Mars, forged a net of bronze links finer than spider-silk and spread it unseen over the marriage bed; the lovers were caught and exhibited, and the gods — Ovid tells it in the Metamorphoses (4.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
The Volcanal in the Forum — an open precinct above the Lapis Niger, with the archaic dedication of a Senate's honorific to the god — anchors his cult in Rome's oldest ground. Vulcano in the Aeolian islands preserves the fumarole fields the ancients called his workshops, and the islands' obsidian industry fed Neolithic trade millennia before the myths. Pompeii's forges, with their anvils and half-finished work, show his everyday cult of the artisans who kept his festival as their own holiday. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.
What We Kept
The evidence, mark by mark — 1 feature the keyboard form vulcanus cannot hold:
- a → ā — Macron marks the long vowel. Kept.
What We Rejected
vulcanus as the primary form. It survives as the convenience it is; it does not get to lead. The hierarchy is full restoration first, and this name can afford to stand at the top of it.
What We Set Down
Vulcānus — What survives here cannot be shown in ASCII: a feature of the original that the fallback alphabet flattens. That is the Tier-1 test, and this name passes it without argument.
For the voice: vul-KAH-nus, long ā on the stressed second syllable.
The temple stands at /vulcanus/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.
