How Vǫr was spoken
Goddess of Oaths and Knowledge
Vǫr is one of the Ásynjur, the goddesses who attend Frigg in Ásgarðr. Her name means "the careful one" or "the aware one," and Snorri says that nothing can be hidden from her. She is the goddess who sees through deception, remembers oaths, and knows the truth that others try to conceal.
Snorri says Vǫr is so wise that nothing can be concealed from her — the divine witness to every secret.
She oversees sworn agreements and remembers the words spoken in haste or hope.
Among Frigg's attendants she is the one whose knowledge makes her counsel valuable.
Her care is not anxiety but attention: the steady gaze that knows what is real.
Stories of Vǫr
Vǫr's mythology is limited to Snorri's catalogue of the Ásynjur, but her function is clear and important.
In Snorri's list of goddesses, Vǫr is described as wise and inquiring: "She is wise and enquiring, so that nothing can be concealed from her." Her name is given as the source of the adjective vǫrr, "careful, aware." The brief entry makes her a personification of attentiveness — the quality that turns mere seeing into knowledge.
Vǫr appears alongside Sága, Eir, Gefjun, and Fulla as one of Frigg's attendants. Unlike some Ásynjur who have individual myths, Vǫr is defined entirely by her attribute: she is the one who knows. In a pantheon where Óðinn seeks wisdom through sacrifice and deception, Vǫr represents a quieter, more constant form of knowledge.
The name Vǫr is related to Old Norse words for being, awareness, and carefulness. It is not a common noun like Þrúðr ("strength") but an adjective made divine. She is carefulness personified — the virtue that notices before it judges and remembers before it forgives.
Vǫr is the goddess who pays attention. In a world of masks and boasts, she is the one who notices the small contradiction, the slipped word, the glance that does not match the smile. Her wisdom is not the wisdom of the runes or the mead of poetry; it is the older wisdom of simply seeing what is there.
