How Viṣṇu was rebuilt, mark by mark
The workshop file for Viṣṇu. Every rejected form is recorded here too — that is the point of keeping notes.
What We Found
The attestation runs through the tradition's own sources: विष्णु. Meaning: "The Preserver — the principal Hindu deity who descends as avatāras to sustain cosmic order (from √viṣ, 'to pervade')".
The figure behind the name: Viṣṇu's mythology grows from a minor Vedic solar figure into the preserver of the cosmos.
What the Name Carried In
The Three Strides of the Wide-Strider. In the Ṛgveda's hymn to the strides (1. 154), Viṣṇu plants three steps and measures the universe: the first covers earth, the second the midspace, and the third — 'where the pious dwell, where the Sun marches in step' — reaches past the reach of birds, past the very gods.
Vāmana and the Generous Demon King. The Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa (1. 2.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
The earliest material evidence of Viṣṇu devotion is the Heliodorus pillar at Besnagar (Vidisha, c. 110 BCE), whose Garuda capital and Brahmi inscription identify Heliodorus, a Greek ambassador, as a Bhāgavata — proof that Vaishnavism had Greek converts within a century of the Mauryas. Gupta-period monuments give the mythology stone: the Varāha panel at Udayagiri Cave 5 (c. 400 CE) and the Anantaśāyin relief at Deogarh, the earliest great narrative images of the sleeping god. The Changu Narayan temple in Nepal (5th century CE) is among the oldest standing Vaishnava shrines, and medieval sites from Tirupati to Angkor Wat testify to a temple culture that carried Viṣṇu's worship across South and Southeast Asia. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.
What We Rejected
The plain ASCII vishnu — admissible as a fallback, never as the primary. A wrong accent would have been worse: the rulebook is explicit that a misplaced mark is worse than none.
What We Set Down
Viṣṇu — The restoration preserves more than the ASCII form can express — stress, length, or a letter the Latin keyboard lost — which places it, mechanically, in Tier-1.
For the voice: 'VISH-noo' — the first syllable has a crisp, tongue-tip sh; the second is short and resonant.
The temple stands at /vishnu/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.
