How Tapas was rebuilt, mark by mark

The workshop file for Tapas. Every rejected form is recorded here too — that is the point of keeping notes.

What We Found

The attestation runs through the tradition's own sources: तपस्. Meaning: "'Heat' — the generative austerity that burns away impurity and powers creation".

The figure behind the name: Tapas’s mythology is the mythology of creative heat: the One’s self-heating before the world, Prajāpati’s austerity that populates creation, and the sages’ banked fires that bend gods and kings.

What the Name Carried In

The One Heated Itself. The creation hymn’s second verse: ‘desire came upon the One in the beginning, that was the first seed of mind’ — and the One, the tradition glosses, heated itself by tapas until it multiplied into the world. The cosmogony is thermal: creation as the overflow of accumulated inner fire.

Prajāpati’s Exhaustion. Prajāpati, having made the world, lay exhausted and dismembered; the gods reassembled him by offering, and his recovered heat (tapas) became the sun. The rite rekindles the creator daily — every sacrifice is a stoking of the first fire, the sun its visible remainder.

A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.

Where It Stood Before Us

Tapas leaves the ascetic’s traces: the śramaṇa figures of Mathura sculpture, the fire-altars of the Śrauta ritual rebuilt a thousand times, and the modern retreat-centres of every Indian tradition. Its monument is the ember. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.

What We Rejected

The plain ASCII tapas — admissible as a fallback, never as the primary. A wrong accent would have been worse: the rulebook is explicit that a misplaced mark is worse than none.

The temple stands at /tapas/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.

The Restoration Files are written from the same canonical record as the temples themselves: the lexicon, the lore catalog, the pattern atlas, and the cited scholarly sources. If a file ever disagrees with its temple, the temple is right — tell us, and the file will be corrected.
