Before the Office, the Story
Lord of Uku Pacha. The earliest European witness is the corregidor Polo de Ondegardo, whose 1571 report De los errores y supersticiones de los indios explains Inca cosmology as three stacked worlds: hanaq pacha, the upper world; kay pacha, this present world; and uku pacha, the inner world within the earth. The dead descended to uku pacha, Polo reports, and there remained in the power of the being they called Supay. Bernabé Cobo repeats the scheme a century later (Historia del Nuevo Mundo 13.
The Caves of Tambillos. The Quechua-language Huarochirí manuscript, recorded by the extirpator Francisco de Ávila in the first years of the seventeenth century (trans. Salomon & Urioste, 1991), treats supay not as a single lord but as a class of dangerous beings — the supaykuna — who dwell in caves, springs, hills, and crossroads and send illness to those who offend them. The most famous haunt is the cavern of Tambillos, near San Pedro de Huarochirí, where the people made offerings of coca and maize beer so that the spirits of the rock would not take their children.

Not the First Rebrand
Supay's entire afterlife is a history of forced translations. The conquering church mapped him onto Satan, and the mapping was so successful that modern Quechua and Aymara use supay as the ordinary word for devil. The office is only the latest translation.
