How Vulcānus was rebuilt, mark by mark

What We Found
The attestation runs through the tradition's own sources: —. Meaning: "Possibly from fulgere (to flash) or a pre-Roman fire root".
The figure behind the name: Roman myth borrowed Hēphaistos' stories for him, but his cult is older and darker than the smith of Olympos: Vulcānus is first the fire that must be averted.
What the Name Carried In
The Fish Fires. At the Volcanalia, the hottest and driest month, Romans threw live fish from the Tiber into bonfires at the Volcanal. The calendars explain the rite as substitution: souls of water given to fire, so that fire takes the offering instead of the granaries.
Venus and Mars. Ovid retells the Odyssey's finest comedy: Vulcānus, tipped off by the Sun, forges a net finer than a spider's thread and catches his wife Venus in bed with Mars. The gods gather to laugh — and the myth carries its Roman moral: craft exposes what force cannot guard.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
The Volcanal in the Forum — an open precinct above the Lapis Niger, with the archaic dedication of a Senate's honorific to the god — anchors his cult in Rome's oldest ground. Vulcano in the Aeolian islands preserves the fumarole fields the ancients called his workshops, and the islands' obsidian industry fed Neolithic trade millennia before the myths. Pompeii's forges, with their anvils and half-finished work, show his everyday cult of the artisans who kept his festival as their own holiday. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.

What We Rejected
vulcanus as the primary form. It survives as the convenience it is; it does not get to lead. The hierarchy is full restoration first, and this name can afford to stand at the top of it.
What We Set Down
Vulcānus — What survives here cannot be shown in ASCII: a feature of the original that the fallback alphabet flattens. That is the Tier-1 test, and this name passes it without argument.
For the voice: vul-KAH-nus, long ā on the stressed second syllable.
