How Viṣṇu was rebuilt, mark by mark

What We Found
The attestation runs through the tradition's own sources: विष्णु. Meaning: "The Preserver — the principal Hindu deity who descends as avatāras to sustain cosmic order (from √viṣ, 'to pervade')".
The figure behind the name: Viṣṇu's mythology grows from a minor Vedic solar figure into the preserver of the cosmos.
What the Name Carried In
The Three Strides. In Ṛgveda 1. 154, Viṣṇu strides out three times.
The Daśāvatāra. The Purāṇas systematize Viṣṇu's descents into ten principal incarnations: Matsya the fish, Kūrma the tortoise, Varāha the boar, Narasiṃha the man-lion, Vāmana the dwarf, Paraśurāma the axe-bearer, Rāma the prince, Kṛṣṇa the cowherd, the Buddha, and the future Kalkī. Each appears in a different cosmic age to counter a specific threat.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
The earliest material evidence of Viṣṇu devotion is the Heliodorus pillar at Besnagar (Vidisha, c. 110 BCE), whose Garuda capital and Brahmi inscription identify Heliodorus as a Bhāgavata Greek ambassador. Gupta-period monuments include the Varāha panel at Udayagiri Cave 5 and the Anantaśāyin relief at Deogarh. The Changu Narayan temple in Nepal (5th century CE) is among the oldest standing Vaishnava shrines. Medieval sites such as Tirupati and Angkor Wat testify to Vaishnava temple culture across South and Southeast Asia. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.
What We Rejected
The plain ASCII vishnu — admissible as a fallback, never as the primary. A wrong accent would have been worse: the rulebook is explicit that a misplaced mark is worse than none.
What We Set Down
Viṣṇu — The restoration preserves more than the ASCII form can express — stress, length, or a letter the Latin keyboard lost — which places it, mechanically, in Tier-1.
For the voice: 'VISH-noo' — the first syllable has a crisp, tongue-tip sh; the second is short and resonant.
The temple stands at /sites/vishnu/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.
