How Troíā was rebuilt, mark by mark
The workshop file for Troíā. Every rejected form is recorded here too — that is the point of keeping notes.
What We Found
The attestation, as Iliad and Homer record: Τροία. Meaning: "Unknown; possibly from Τρωός".
The figure behind the name: The Trojan cycle is the largest story the Greeks told: from the wedding of Pēleús and the Apple of Discord to the Returns of the heroes, it fills eight epics, of which the Iliad and Odyssey are only the surviving heart.
What the Name Carried In
The Apple. Eris, uninvited to the wedding of Pēleús and Thetis, threw a golden apple inscribed "for the fairest. " Zeús delegated the verdict to the Trojan prince Paris, herding on Mount Ida: Hēra offered empire, Athēnā victory, Aphrodítē the most beautiful woman in the world.
Nine Years and a Quarrel. A thousand ships gathered at Aulis; nine years raided the Troad before the Iliad even begins. The poem's subject is a quarrel in the tenth year — Agamemnōn's seizure of Brisēis, Achilleús' withdrawal, and the chain of deaths from Pátroklos to Hektōr — yet behind it stands the city's doom, prophesied and accepted by every combatant.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
Hisarlık in northwest Anatolia preserves nine major settlement layers (Troy I–IX), ca. 3000 BCE–500 CE. The candidates for Homer's city are Troy VI (destroyed ca. 1250 BCE, by earthquake or war) and Troy VIIa (burned ca. 1180 BCE, with sling stones and arrowheads in the destruction debris). UNESCO listed the site in 1998. The "Treasure of Priam" Schliemann smuggled out is now split between Moscow and Istanbul, and the Hittite Tawagalawa letter mentioning a king of Ahhiyawa (Achaeans?) at Millawanda places Greek-Anatolian conflict in the right sea at the right century. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.
What We Kept
The evidence, mark by mark — 2 features the keyboard form troia cannot hold:
- i → í — Acute on iota. Kept.
- a → ā — Long final alpha. Kept.
What We Rejected
The plain ASCII troia — admissible as a fallback, never as the primary. A wrong accent would have been worse: the rulebook is explicit that a misplaced mark is worse than none.
What We Set Down
Troíā — The restoration preserves more than the ASCII form can express — stress, length, or a letter the Latin keyboard lost — which places it, mechanically, in Tier-1.
For the voice: tROY-ah, with the stress on the final syllable and a long ā.
The temple stands at /sites/troia/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.
