How Ištar was rebuilt, mark by mark
Bench notes, Ištar: what we found, what we rejected, and what we finally set down. Kept in the open, because a restoration you cannot audit is just a spelling with confidence.
What We Found
The attestation runs through the tradition's own sources: 𒀭𒀹𒁯. Meaning: "Lady of Heaven (Akkadian Ištar)".
The figure behind the name: Ištar's myths are stories of extremity: descent into death, demand for the impossible, and the transformation of gender and power.
What the Name Carried In
Inanna's Descent to the Underworld. In the Sumerian Descent of Inanna, the goddess abandons heaven and earth to descend to the netherworld ruled by her sister Ereshkigal. At each of the seven gates she is stripped of a garment or ornament until she stands naked before the throne of the dead.
Ištar and the Bull of Heaven. In Tablet VI of the Epic of Gilgamesh, Ištar proposes marriage to Gilgamesh, king of Uruk. He rejects her, listing the fates of her previous mortal lovers — Dumuzi, the shepherd; the lion; the horse; the shepherd-bird; and the gardener Išullanu.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
The glazed-brick Ishtar Gate, excavated at Babylon by Robert Koldewey and now in Berlin's Pergamon Museum, displays lions, aurochs, and mušḫuššu-dragons marking the goddess's processional way. At Uruk, the Eanna precinct preserves temples of Inanna; at Assur, the Assyrian Ishtar temple yielded votive inscriptions of Sennacherib and Esarhaddon. Countless cylinder seals, terracotta plaques, and ivory panels show her as armed goddess, nude fertility figure, and eight-pointed star. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.
What We Rejected
Any form invented for availability. The rule on the bench: if the evidence does not carry it, the domain does not get it — whatever the registrar has in stock.
What We Set Down
Ištar — Tier-1 is not a compliment; it is a measurement. This restoration keeps something the ASCII form provably loses, and the measurement is repeatable.
For the voice: 'EESH-tar' — the š is like the sh in 'ship,' and the final syllable is slightly drawn out.
The temple stands at /sites/ishtar/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.
