Atlantís: the stories first, then the spelling

Before the spelling, the story. Atlantís earns its restoration the old way — through what was actually told.

The Stories That Carry the Name

The Egyptian Priest's Tale. Solon visits Egypt and hears from a priest that Athens once defeated a great Atlantic power nine thousand years earlier. The Greeks have forgotten because catastrophes repeatedly destroy their records, while Egypt's memory is preserved by the Nile's stability.

The Island and Its Kings. Atlantis was allotted to Poseidon, who fell in love with a mortal woman, Kleito. Their descendants built a magnificent capital of concentric harbors, temples, and walls. For generations they were virtuous; then wealth and power corrupted them.

The Cataclysm. Zeus assembled the gods to punish Atlantis. 'There were earthquakes and floods of extraordinary violence, and in a single dreadful day and night all your fighting men were swallowed up by the earth, and the island of Atlantis was similarly swallowed up by the sea and vanished. ' Only mud shoals remained.

And Here Is What the Spelling Preserves

Against those stories, the attestation: Ἀτλαντίς, in the attestation LSJ and Beekes, Etymological Dictionary of Greek give us. The name means "Daughter of Atlas; the legendary lost island civilization".

The restoration keeps one feature the ASCII form atlantis cannot show:

A storyteller pronouncing the name would restore every one of them by instinct. The file only writes down what the voice already knows.

At a Glance

The Name Travels

Plato's Atlantis may draw on memories of the Minoan eruption on Thera, the Bronze Age collapse, or Egyptian traditions of the distant west. It has been identified with Tartessos, Santorini, Malta, and countless other places.

The Address It Earned

The temple of Atlantís stands at /sites/atlantis/lore, scholars, patterns — because a name carrying this much story deserves more than a parking page. One decisive feature survives — a single, honest mark — which places the restoration in Tier-2: exact, and exactly labeled.

The File Continues

Read the founding dispatch for the name's full story, the Resonance File for the archetype at work — or the whole archive in one sitting.

The Restoration Files are written from the same canonical record as the temples themselves: the lexicon, the lore catalog, the pattern atlas, and the cited scholarly sources. If a file ever disagrees with its temple, the temple is right — tell us, and the file will be corrected.
