Pryderi's mythology is unique in Welsh prose: he is the only character who appears in all Four Branches of the Mabinogi, and his life is the thread the whole cycle is strung on. The First Branch gives his birth, theft, and naming; the Second carries him through the Irish war as one of the seven survivors; the Third empties his kingdom and takes him captive; the Fourth kills him. Every word of it is medieval Welsh prose, preserved in two great manuscripts.

The Myth at Work
The May-Eve Vanishing. Pryderi is born to Pwyll and Rhiannon after the nobles of Dyfed have pressed for an heir, and on the night of his birth the six women set to watch all fall asleep — and the child is gone. Terrified of the blame, the women kill the pups of a hound, smear the blood on Rhiannon's face, lay the bones beside her, and swear she has destroyed her own son; her penance at the horse-block begins, and it will last until the boy comes home. — that is not just a story. It is a business model, four thousand years early.
The Naming at Arberth. Gwri grows with uncanny speed — at the end of his first year sturdier than a child of three, at two like a boy of six — and year by year he bears the very likeness of Pwyll. When Teyrnon hears of Rhiannon's penance, he knows what he must do, and he and his wife bring the boy to Arberth. — that is not just a story. It is a business model, four thousand years early.

The Long Employment
Lady Charlotte Guest's translation of the Mabinogion (1838–49) carried Pryderi out of the Welsh manuscripts and into English, and the Victorian Celtic revival made the vanished child of the First Branch one of its set-pieces. Twentieth-century scholarship gave him his modern standing: Ifor Williams's edition fixed the standard Welsh text, W. The age changed. The work did not.
