Before the Office, the Story
The Canoe from Kahiki. Pele came to Hawai'i from Kahiki — the ancestral homeland the Hawaiians left in the deep past — voyaging in a canoe with her brothers and sisters. Behind her she left a feud: her sister Nāmakaokaha'i, a sea goddess, held Pele to account for a seduction in the old country, and the ocean pursued the canoe across the archipelago. At island after island Nāmaka caught up, and Pele's fires were quenched in steam; in the long versions the sea caught her at last and tore her apart, and only her bones, gathered by her brothers, were carried on to be made alive again.
The Digging Stick Pā'oa. From island to island Pele dug with her sacred digging stick Pā'oa, sinking deep pits in search of a fire-pit the sea's creatures could not kill. Kaua'i, O'ahu, the channels of Maui — at each, the water found her out and drove her on, the steam of her drowning fires rising as the islands' mists. At last, on the great island of Hawai'i, she sank her pit into the flank of Kīlauea, and the sea could not reach it.

Not the First Rebrand
Protestant missions spent a century casting Pele as a demon, and nineteenth-century law punished her worship; yet she survived better than almost any Polynesian deity, because her cult needed no temple — only the crater. In the twentieth century she re-emerged as the central figure of the Hawaiian renaissance: the battles over geothermal drilling inside Kīlauea in the 1970s and 80s were fought explicitly in her name, with kūpuna chanting at the wellheads. The office is only the latest translation.
