Myrddin's dossier divides in two, and the tradition itself knew it: the northern prophet who went mad at Arfderydd and fled to Coed Celyddon, preserved in the Welsh Triads, the Annales Cambriae, and the Black Book poems; and Geoffrey of Monmouth's Merlinus, who carried the wild man into Latin and grafted him onto the Arthurian world. Gerald of Wales already separated them in the twelfth century: Merlinus Ambrosius, the boy prophet of Vortigern's tower, and Merlinus Celidonius — Sylvester — the wild man of the Caledonian forest.

The Myth at Work
The Battle of Arfderydd. The Annales Cambriae enter under the year 573 the battle of Arfderydd, fought in the north between the sons of Eliffer and Gwenddolau son of Ceidio — a historical-seeming conflict of the British Old North. The Welsh Triads count it among the futile battles of the Island of Britain, brought about, in the triad's famous understatement, for a lark's nest; and the triad records the consequence that matters here: Gwenddolau fell, and Myrddin became mad. — remember the shape of that act. You will see it again, wearing a logo.
The Apple Trees and the Oianau. The earliest Welsh manuscript, the Black Book of Carmarthen (c. 1250), preserves the poems that give the wild man his own voice. — hold that image; the industries below are where it goes to work.

The Long Employment
No Celtic figure has had a stranger second life. Geoffrey's Prophetiae Merlini — the seventh book of the Historia — circulated separately for centuries and became the most copied political prophecy of the Latin Middle Ages, mined for omens by kings and rebels alike; the romances then turned the prophet into the enchanter, and by the thirteenth-century Vulgate cycle Merlin is Arthur's maker: arranger of Uther's night at Tintagel, keeper of the Round Table's founding, and prisoner of the Lady of the Lake. The age changed. The work did not.
