How Libyē was rebuilt, mark by mark
Bench notes, Libyē: what we found, what we rejected, and what we finally set down. Kept in the open, because a restoration you cannot audit is just a spelling with confidence.
What We Found
The attestation, in the attestation Herodotus, Histories 4.168–199 (Libyan ethnography) and Apollodorus, Library 2.1.4 and 2.5.11 (genealogy of Libya; the apples of the Hesperides) give us: Λιβύη. Meaning: "The African continent (etymology uncertain)".
The figure behind the name: Libyē is the Greek name for Africa west of Egypt, personified as a daughter of Epaphus and Memphis.
What the Name Carried In
Daughter of Io and Epaphus. Libya's father was Epaphus, the son born to Io after her wanderings from Argos to Egypt. Io, transformed into a heifer by Zeus and driven across Europe and Asia, finally found rest in Egypt, where Zeus restored her and she bore Epaphus.
Mother of Belus and Agenor. By Poseidon, Libya bore twin sons Belus and Agenor, who became the eponymous founders of the dynasties of Egypt and Phoenicia (Apollodorus, Library 2. 1.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
The Libu are material before they are myth. Egyptian records name them from the New Kingdom onward — among the hostile 'Nine Bows' on the great Karnak inscription of Merneptah (c. 1208 BCE) and as captives with sidelocks and phallic sheaths on the reliefs of Ramesses III's Libyan wars at Medinet Habu (twelfth century BCE). Greek colonisation then wrote the name in stone: Cyrene, founded c. 631 BCE by Battus of Thera (Herodotus 4.150–158), with its great temple of Apollo and its coinage bearing the silphium plant; the sanctuary of Ammon at Siwa (Aghurmi), where Alexander was confirmed in 331 BCE; and the Severan cities of Tripolitania — Leptis Magna's forum and arch of Septimius Severus, Sabratha's theatre — which carry the name into the Roman centuries. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.
What We Kept
The evidence, mark by mark — 1 feature the keyboard form libye cannot hold:
- e → ē — Eta: long vowel. Kept.
What We Rejected
Any form invented for availability. The rule on the bench: if the evidence does not carry it, the domain does not get it — whatever the registrar has in stock.
What We Set Down
Libyē — Tier-1 is not a compliment; it is a measurement. This restoration keeps something the ASCII form provably loses, and the measurement is repeatable.
For the voice: 'lee-BOO-ay' — the middle vowel is tight and rounded like French u, and the final 'ay' is held long.
The temple stands at /libye/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.

The File Continues
The temple's founding dispatch tells the name's story; its Resonance File reads the myths into the industries; the blog index holds the whole archive.

The Restoration Files are written from the same canonical record as the temples themselves: the lexicon, the lore catalog, the pattern atlas, and the cited scholarly sources. If a file ever disagrees with its temple, the temple is right — tell us, and the file will be corrected.
