Mythology

Stories of Izanami

Izanami's mythology is central to Japanese understandings of creation, death, and the separation between the living and the dead.

Kojiki / Nihon Shoki

The Creation of the Islands

Standing on the Floating Bridge of Heaven, Izanami and Izanagi stirred the primordial ocean with the jeweled spear. When they lifted it, brine dripped and congealed into the first island. They descended and, after a failed first marriage ceremony caused by Izanami speaking first, properly created the Japanese archipelago.

Kojiki

Death in Childbirth

Izanami gave birth to the fire god Kagutsuchi, whose flames burned her so severely that she died. From her dying body came further kami: the mountains, rivers, and earth. Her death introduced mortality into the world and sent Izanagi on his grief-stricken journey to Yomi.

Kojiki

The Queen of Yomi

In the underworld, Izanami was consumed by decay and rage. When Izanagi broke his promise not to look at her, she pursued him to the boundary of Yomi and cursed him: she would kill one thousand people each day. Izanagi replied that he would cause one thousand five hundred to be born. This exchange established the endless traffic between life and death.

Extended Lore

Izanami is the first separation. Her death created the underworld, and her curse set the rhythm of mortality. To remember her is to remember that life and death are not opposites but phases of a single story, and that the one who gives birth may also become the one who receives the dead.
