The Cult
No cult of Eir is attested, and the record must be exact: no runestone, no votive, no place-name, no sanctuary names her, and nothing archaeological can be laid at her feet. What survives is three medieval mentions — Gylfaginning's 'best physician', Fjölsvinnsmál's maidens of Lyfjaberg, the valkyrie lists of the þulur — and the religious reality behind them must be inferred, not read. That reality was probably the household: northern healing was a spoken craft of charms and laying-on of hands, and Sigrdrífumál's healing runes show mortal hands doing Eir's work. She looks like the personification of that craft raised to ásynja — a goddess distilled from practice rather than worshipped in a temple. Healing rites addressed to her today belong to the modern revival, not to the Viking Age.
