Before the spelling, the story. Daramulum earns its restoration the old way — through what was actually told.
The Stories That Carry the Name
The One-Legged Son of Baiame. Daramulum is the son of Baiame, the creator and sky father. Accounts collected in the Sydney region describe him as a being of strange form — sometimes one-legged, sometimes with an emu's foot — who serves as his father's messenger and enforcer. His unusual body is not a deformity but a sign of his other-than-human nature and his connection to the emu, a bird that stands on one leg and that appears in the sky as a dark constellation.
The Bora and the Law. The bora is the initiation ground where boys are ritually introduced to the responsibilities of men. Daramulum is said to attend these ceremonies as guardian and witness; the bullroarer, a sacred instrument whose sound is heard from the bora ring, is sometimes identified with his voice or with the voice of Baiame speaking through him. To break the secrecy of the bora or to mock its procedures is to risk his anger.
The Emu in the Sky. In the dark spaces of the Milky Way, Aboriginal observers trace the body of an emu: the head in the Coalsack near the Southern Cross, the neck and body stretching through the Centaurus and Scorpius dust lanes, and the legs toward Ophiuchus. For some southeastern traditions this celestial emu is Daramulum himself, or his camp, or the sign by which he watches over the seasons. When the emu stands upright in the evening sky, it is time to collect emu eggs; when she sits, it is time for ceremony.
