Provenance
1. The attestation. Χάος — "Gap, yawning void (from χάος)". On record: LSJ, Beekes, Hesiod, Theogony 116–125, 211–232, 748–757, Ovid, Metamorphoses 1.5–31.
2. The preserved evidence. a → á (Acute on alpha) — absent from the ASCII form chaos, present in the restoration, verifiable against the sources above.
3. The narrative record. First of All, Cháos — Hesiod opens the Theogony (116) with the famous line: ‘Verily at the first Cháos came to be, but next wide-bosomed Gaia. ’ The verb matters: Cháos did not exist from everlasting; it came to be (genet’) — the first event, the first thing to arise from whatever preceded things. Erebos and Nyx — From Cháos come Erebos (deep Darkness) and Nyx (Night) — Theogony 123 — and they are not made by any act of will; they simply differentiate out of the gap, the first distinctions inside the opening. Nyx then bears a whole brood of her own without a mate: Doom (Moros), black Ker, Thanatos, Hypnos, the tribe of Oneiroi, Blame, Woe, and finally Éris, Strife, mother of toils and forgetfulness and famine and pains (Theogony 211–232).
4. The physical record. No sanctuary, altar, or votive of Cháos is known anywhere in the Greek or Roman world — the god of the gap left no dedications, and that absence is itself the archaeological fact. The figure's material trace is textual and Orphic: the Derveni Papyrus (ca. 340 BCE) is a philosophical commentary on a hexameter theogony of the Hesiodic type, proving that such cosmogonies circulated as books in the classical city. In Roman art the separated elements appear personified in floor mosaics — Ocean, Sun, Earth — as the ordered world that came after the gap; the gap itself, being nothing, could be depicted only by what replaced it.
5. The current holding. The temple at /chaos/, classified Tier 2. One decisive feature survives — a single, honest mark — which places the restoration in Tier-2: exact, and exactly labeled.
