Somewhere right now, in a finance, wealth & commerce office, someone is doing exactly what the myths describe — and has never heard of Benzaiten. This file is the introduction.
Before the Office, the Story
The River Who Became Speech. In India, Sarasvatī was first a river and then a goddess. The Ṛgveda (6. 61) hymns her in the triple superlative: 'the best of mothers, best of rivers, best of goddesses,' flowing mountain-strong from the heights to the sea.
The Goddess Who Guards the Preachers. Buddhism carried Sarasvatī east, and the Lotus Sūtra gave her its highest commission. In the chapter devoted to her, she appears before the assembly with her retinue and vows to protect and nourish all who keep, recite, and preach the sūtra in the 'evil age to come': she will grant them eloquence, memory, and 'the charm of voice' that can win every assembly, and she teaches a dhāraṇī for their safety. The commission is the pivot of her whole biography: the river-goddess who once watered fields becomes the guardian of the text-field — the first link in the chain that ends, centuries later, in a Japanese fortune ship.
