Before the Office, the Story

The Vows of Dharmākara. Long ago, the monk Dharmākara made forty-eight vows before a former Buddha. The eighteenth vow became the foundation of Pure Land faith: beings who sincerely desired rebirth in his Pure Land and called his name would be welcomed there. After countless ages of practice, Dharmākara fulfilled these vows and became Amida Buddha, presiding over Sukhāvatī, the Land of Bliss.

Honen and the Single Practice. In the 12th century, the monk Hōnen declared that in the degenerate age of the Dharma, ordinary people could not achieve enlightenment by their own effort. The single practice of calling Amida's name — nenbutsu — was sufficient. His disciple Shinran deepened this into a path of absolute reliance on Amida's Other Power (tariki), shaping Jōdo Shinshū, the largest Buddhist denomination in Japan.
