The provenance file on Álfheimr

Provenance record 019 · Álfheimr · one temple, fully accounted for.

Provenance

1. The attestation. ᛅᛚᚠᚼᛁᛘᚱ, from the tradition's own record. On record: Poetic Edda: Grímnismál 5 (Álfheim given to Freyr as tannfé); Alvíssmál 9–35 (the elves' names for the world); trans. Carolyne Larrington (Oxford, 2014)., Snorri Sturluson, Edda: Gylfaginning ch. 8 (the light and dark elves of Álfheim), trans. Anthony Faulkes (Everyman, 1987)., Sigvatr Þórðarson, Austrfarvísur sts. 4–6 (the álfablót), in Diana Whaley (ed.), Poetry from the Kings' Sagas 1 (Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages I, 2012)., Lindow, John, Norse Mythology: A Guide to the Gods, Heroes, Rituals, and Beliefs (Oxford, 2001), s.v. elves..

2. The preserved evidence. a → Á (Acute on initial alpha) — absent from the ASCII form alfheimr, present in the restoration, verifiable against the sources above.

3. The narrative record. The Tooth-Gift of the Gods — The fullest account of the gift is a single half-stanza. Grímnismál 5 runs: 'Álfheim the gods gave to Freyr in days of old, as a tooth-gift (tannfé)' — the customary present to an infant when the first tooth appears — and Snorri repeats the line in his enumeration of the heavenly regions (Gylfaginning, ch. The Dwarf's Catalogue — Alvíssmál, 'The Sayings of All-Wise,' is structured around a journey from under the earth to the world above. The dwarf Alvíss seeks to marry Þórr's daughter, and the thunder-god delays him through the night by asking what things are called among the different peoples.

4. The physical record. No artifact bears the label 'Álfheimr'; the realm's material traces are indirect. The documentary bedrock is the skaldic stanza — Sigvatr's account of an álfablót performed around 1018 — which establishes the cult a century and more after conversion. Onomastics preserves the footprint: Álf- compound farm and place-names in Norway and Iceland (álfhóll, 'elf-hill', is a recurring element) mark remembered elf-territory. The high-status boat burials of Oseberg (c. 834 CE) and Gokstad preserve the aristocratic culture in which álfar beliefs circulated, and small finds — amulets and figurines variously read as valkyries, gods, or landvættir — show the population of the spirit world, though none can be pinned to the light elves specifically. The most persistent 'site' is folkloric: elf-hows, elf-stones, and elf-fields catalogued by nineteenth-century collectors, still pointed out in Scandinavian and Icelandic landscapes.

5. The current holding. The temple at /alfheimr/, classified Tier 1. The restoration preserves more than the ASCII form can express — stress, length, or a letter the Latin keyboard lost — which places it, mechanically, in Tier-1.

6. The documented resonances. Gaming, Fantasy & Entertainment IP, Agriculture, Food & Harvest, Beauty, Fashion & Cosmetics — seats argued and weighted in the pattern atlas, read through the myths in this temple's Resonance File.

7. The primary sources. Poetic Edda, Prose Edda — the library this file answers to, open at the Sacred Texts collection.

8. The continuing record. Álfheimr today lives a double life. In Iceland, belief-adjacent respect for the huldufólk remains culturally legible — road projects have been rerouted around suspected elf-rocks, and the hidden people still surface in polls and news copy as a way of talking about the land's claims.

The Restoration Files are written from the same canonical record as the temples themselves: the lexicon, the lore catalog, the pattern atlas, and the cited scholarly sources. If a file ever disagrees with its temple, the temple is right — tell us, and the file will be corrected.
