The Cult
Xīwángmǔ received extensive Han-dynasty court cult as dispenser of long life and cosmic order; the Han Shu records popular movements and imperial sacrifices addressed to her. Bronze mirrors and tomb reliefs invoke her for protection and immortality, while later Daoist ritual transformed her into a central deity of the western paradise, the hostess of the Peaches of Immortality. Pilgrimage traditions associated her with Mount Kūnlún, and modern Daoist temples throughout the Chinese world enshrine her as the Queen Mother of the West. Her cult has never died: birthday rites on the third day of the third lunar month and Daoist liturgies still address her by her ancient title.
