The Cult
There is no cult of Ugayafukiaezu, and honesty requires saying so plainly: no shrine, no festival, no offering, no priesthood is attested to him in any period. His existence is genealogical — one link in the Kojiki's chain from Ninigi to Jimmu — and the rites addressed to that chain honour its head, not its middle. The nearest approach to a cult site belongs to his son: the tomb attributed to Jimmu at Kashihara, tended by the Imperial Household Agency, and the birth-hut landscape of the Hyūga coast, where the story is commemorated rather than worshipped. A figure born under an unfinished roof has, fittingly, no finished temple.
