The Cult
Thoth was worshipped above all at Khemenu, later Hermopolis Magna, in Middle Egypt, where his temple and the vast ibis and baboon cemeteries have been excavated. Thousands of mummified ibises and baboons were deposited as votive offerings at Saqqara, Tuna el-Gebel, and other sites, testifying to a cult that linked the god to lunar measurement, writing, and healing. Priests associated with the House of Life attached to temples produced, copied, and curated ritual and literary texts. The cult flourished from the Old Kingdom through the Graeco-Roman period, when Greeks identified Thoth with Hermes.
