The provenance file on Surtr
Provenance record 504 · Surtr · one temple, fully accounted for.
Provenance
1. The attestation. ᛋᚢᚱᛏᚱ, from the tradition's own record. On record: Völuspá (the Ragnarök stanzas), Vafþrúðnismál (the doom-arithmetic), Snorri, Gylfaginning (Múspellsheimr and the sons of Múspell), Fáfnismál (the forewarning of doom).
2. The narrative record. The One from the South — The seeress’ prophecy reserves its starkest stanzas for him: ‘Surtr comes from the south with the bane of branches, the sun of the battle-gods shone from his sword. ’ He rides first of the doom-forces; his arrival is the sign that the last battle has begun, and the sky itself catches fire from his blade. The Contest of Wisdom — Odin’s wisdom-contest with the giant Vafþrúðnir fixes the cosmography: Surtr and the Æsir’s gods will meet at the field of Vígríðr, and ‘he will return home victorious’ from the encounter with Freyr. The poem’s calm arithmetic of doom — the lists of who kills whom — gives Surtr the war’s decisive duel.
3. The physical record. Surtr’s monuments are volcanic: Iceland’s Surtshellir cave was used from the settlement age, its name the giant’s. The Eddic manuscripts — Codex Regius and its kin — give the words; the island’s lava-fields give the theatre.
4. The current holding. The temple at /surtr/, a temple of the restored name. aSCII-equivalent form
5. The documented resonances. Disaster Resilience & Recovery, Thermal, Geothermal & Fire Energy, Gaming, Fantasy & Entertainment IP — seats argued and weighted in the pattern atlas, read through the myths in this temple's Resonance File.
6. The primary sources. Poetic Edda, Prose Edda — the library this file answers to, open at the Sacred Texts collection.
7. The continuing record. The Völuspá’s ‘sun of the battle-gods’ image remains Norse mythology’s most quoted line of doom; and Surtr is the fantasy genre’s template for the fire-giant — from D&D’s fire giants to video games, his name is the standard label for volcanic end-bosses. Iceland’s volcanic place-names (Surtshellir, the ‘cave of Surtr’) keep him in the landscape itself.
