Walk into any solar & renewable energy outfit and watch for ten minutes. You will see a very old act performed with newer props. The act has a name. It is Mahāvairocana.
Before the Office, the Story
The Buddha Whose Body Is the Cosmos. The Avataṃsaka Sūtra, the Flower Garland, opens on a scale no other scripture attempts: Vairocana enthroned not in a grove but in the dharmadhātu itself, every pore of his body a world-system, every atom of every world containing all the others. The Huayan masters drew the sūtra's vision as Indra's net — an infinite web with a jewel at every crossing, each jewel mirroring every other. It is the largest picture of interdependence ever painted: nothing exists alone, and the Great Sun is the name for the whole net seen at once.
The Sun That Preaches Without Words. The esoteric tradition's own charters, the Mahāvairocana Sūtra and its twin the Tattvasaṃgraha, present the cosmic Buddha not as a person among persons but as the dharmakāya — the Dharma-body — whose sermon is reality's ongoing act of existing. Kūkai gave this its boldest formula: hosshin seppō, the dharmakāya itself preaches. Mountains, rivers, the sound of rain — for Shingon these are not metaphors for the teaching but the teaching in progress, and the maṇḍala is the lesson read as a map.

Not the First Rebrand
The name itself is an old loan from the sun: Monier-Williams lists Vairocana as a solar epithet and even as a Dānava king, the son of Prahlāda and father of Bali — Buddhism took the word for light and made it the light-source of the Dharma. In Japan the identification ran the other way as well: medieval honji-suijaku thought read Dainichi as the true face of Amaterasu, the sun goddess of Ise, fusing the two great suns of the archipelago's religions. The office is only the latest translation.
