Tlāltēcuhtli appears in several Mesoamerican creation accounts as the earth monster who must be defeated and dismembered before the present world can exist. The most detailed Nahuatl version is the Histoyre du Méchique, in which Quetzalcōātl and Tēzcatlīpōca split the earth monster in two; the K'iche' Maya Popol Vuh preserves a cognate tradition.

The Myth at Work
The Dismemberment of the Earth Monster. In the Nahua cosmogony preserved by colonial sources, the gods created the present earth from the body of a great monster. In some versions Quetzalcōātl and Tēzcatlīpōca seized Tlāltēcuhtli or a crocodilian earth-being and tore it in two: one half became the sky, the other the earth. — hold that image; the industries below are where it goes to work.
The Sun's Nightly Journey. Each evening the sun descends into the gaping mouth of Tlāltēcuhtli in the west. The earth devours the luminary, holds it through the night, and gives birth to it again in the east. — remember the shape of that act. You will see it again, wearing a logo.

The Long Employment
Tlāltēcuhtli entered global consciousness through the vivid monolith discovered during the Templo Mayor excavations in Mexico City — a massive red-painted stone slab showing the crouching, fanged earth lord. The image has become a staple of museum exhibitions on Aztec cosmology and a touchstone for discussions of ecological reciprocity in pre-Columbian thought. The age changed. The work did not.
