Provenance
1. The attestation. Ὑγίεια — "Health, soundness; personified as the goddess of health and cleanliness". On record: LSJ, Beekes, Etymological Dictionary of Greek, Hesiod, Works and Days, Pausanias, Description of Greece.
2. The preserved evidence. i → í (Acute on iota) — absent from the ASCII form hygieia, present in the restoration, verifiable against the sources above.
3. The narrative record. The Blessing of Health — Hesiod makes health a cardinal blessing: 'First, a house, a wife, and an ox for the plough. ' Among the goods he prays for, soundness of body ranks high. Daughter of Asklepios — In the Asklepieia, Hygíeia was worshipped alongside her father Asklepios, her sister Panakeia, and the healing hero. Votive inscriptions thank her for recovery and pray for continued health; she is the preventive counterpart to Asklepios's curative power.
4. The physical record. Hygíeia was worshipped at major Asklepieia including Epidauros, Athens, Kos, and Pergamon. Votive reliefs show her standing beside Asklepios with a snake or bowl. The Athenian Asklepieion on the south slope of the Acropolis and the great sanctuary at Epidauros yield numerous dedications naming her. Statues of Hygieia were common in Roman villas and public baths.
