What We Found
The attestation runs through the tradition's own sources: 𐤀𐤔𐤓𐤕. Meaning: "She who treads on the sea".
The figure behind the name: Ašeratu's mythology is the mythology of influence.
What the Name Carried In
The Queen Mother's Journey. In KTU 1. 4, Baꜥal longs for a palace but cannot win Ēl's approval directly.
Creatress of the Gods. Ašeratu is repeatedly called qnyt ʾilm, 'Creatress of the Gods' (KTU 1. 3 v 25–26; 1.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
The Ugaritic tablets from Ras Shamra (KTU 1.3–1.4, 1.23) preserve Ašeratu's titles and intercessory role in alphabetic cuneiform. The Hittite Elkunirša myth from Boğazköy-Hattusa adapts her as Ašertu, consort of Elkunirša and a weaver of divine children. Phoenician inscriptions (CIS/KAI) attest ʾšrt in theophoric names. In Israel and Judah, the Kuntillet ʿAjrud and Khirbet el-Qom inscriptions, the Taanach cult stands, and the Jerusalem temple asherah (2 Kings 23) provide material and textual witnesses to her contested cult. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.
What We Rejected
The plain ASCII aseratu — admissible as a fallback, never as the primary. A wrong accent would have been worse: the rulebook is explicit that a misplaced mark is worse than none.
What We Set Down
Ašeratu — The restoration preserves more than the ASCII form can express — stress, length, or a letter the Latin keyboard lost — which places it, mechanically, in Tier-1.
For the voice: 'ah-she-RAH-too' — begin with a slight catch in the throat, then 'she' with a crisp sh, roll or tap the r, and end with 'rah-too'.
The temple stands at /sites/aseratu/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.
