The name is attested as Ἄρτεμις, as LSJ and Beekes record. On the evidence, it means "Safe, unharmed (from ἀρτεμής)".
Strip Ártemis to artemis and one piece of evidence vanishes:
- a → Á — Acute on alpha: the stress position the ASCII form cannot show.
These are the small, provable things a restoration is made of: not taste, not branding — attestation.
Spoken, the name runs `/ár.te.mis/` — 'AR-te-miss' — the first syllable is sharp and high; the name is quick, like the arrow she looses.
